A pen and a rough sheet would
reside close to the music system. A cassette would roll clockwise and let
song out of the devise. As the song starts, ears & hand would work in
tandem. Listening to the song,
word by word, the pen would scribble the lyrics
on the sheet. Penning lyrics would continue till last line on the song is
heard. But a perfect penning would not have happened. With some lines missing and
some words left out- the pen would leave many places blank.
It was now the job of the eyes to
scan & look out for blanks. Having scanned the page, the hand would be
instructed to press the rewind button on the system. Second time - the song
would be played and this time, the pen would only fill the blanks.
Attempting a 3rd time rewind
would need approvals. Frequent rewinds could affect the cassette's health; put
the music system at risk. Its only after sufficient pleadings the brain
would grant approval for the 3rd and final rewind. This time, very
cautiously the pen would take down missing notes and complete song on the
sheet.
Having
achieved this task, the sheet will walk up to the Lyrics Book. The
impressively decorated Lyrics Book would jot down all the lyrics in a neat
and tidy manner. Thus the lyrics would find its home for the rest of their
life..
I was disposing some old music
cassettes. One "cassette case" got nostalgic and narrated the above
incident to me, It did not know, the brain, the hands & the eyes were mine.
The pen & the Lyrics Book were owned by me.

Lovely piece. I was just speaking to my mum the other day about how it's great now that DVDs and CDs don't wear the same way as tapes. My daughter has some of the same stuff on repeat all the time. When I was a kid, I wore through a vew tapes because I loved them so much.
Oh my!! This made me nostalgic. Me n sis would do the same thing. Will have to search for our lyrics notebook now! Lovely post!
I would have to rewind the tape at least ten times to write down the lyrics...

Cassettes! That brings back so many memories. :)
all of u relate to what has been said. i am from that genre, where we used to listen to the radio and pen down the lyrics. you never know when the song would be replayed and in which radio station. one would feel cheated when u turn on and the last line was being played. still treasuring those THREE NOTE BOOKS OF SONGS which contain lyrics collected this way:)
